Text & Copy Tools

3 min read

Tools that draft, rewrite, and shape words. Useful for briefs, microcopy, and first-pass content you then edit with a designer’s judgement.

Adobe Illustrator AI

Paid subscription · from $55/mo · Adobe Illustrator AI

Adobe Illustrator’s AI features, Generative Shape Fill, Mockup, and the Firefly Vector workflow, let you extend, recolour, or generate elements without leaving your working file. For practising graphic designers this is the path of least resistance: AI that fits inside a tool you already bill hours in, with output that’s editable and commercially licensed. The limitation is that it requires a Creative Cloud subscription you may already be paying for or might not need otherwise.

Claude

Freemium · from $0 · Claude

Claude handles long, nuanced writing tasks better than most alternatives, it’s particularly strong for design critique prompts where you want structured feedback rather than a single-sentence response, and for writing extended creative briefs without losing context halfway through. The free tier is generous; the paid version adds longer context windows which matters when you’re feeding it an entire project brief to analyse.

Google Gemini

Freemium · from $0 · Google Gemini

Gemini’s most useful feature for designers is its live web access, when you’re researching a brand, sector, or visual trend, it can pull current information and synthesise it in one step rather than asking you to copy-paste between tabs. The multimodal capability (upload an image, ask questions about it) is also genuinely practical for quick visual analysis during a critique session.

ChatGPT

Freemium · from $0 · ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the starting point most designers already know, it’s useful for drafting design briefs, writing client-facing copy, and generating naming options faster than a blank document. The most practical gains come from learning to write structured prompts rather than conversational ones; treating it like a junior copywriter who needs a well-specified brief rather than a mind-reader gives much better results.

Perplexity AI

Freemium · from $0 · Perplexity AI

Perplexity gives you search results with citations baked in, useful when you need to verify a claim, research a client’s industry quickly, or check that a trend you’re designing around is real and current. It’s better thought of as a research assistant than a writing tool; for generating copy or briefs, a chat LLM is more flexible, but for fact-checking and sourcing, Perplexity’s cited-answer format saves time.

Cursor

Freemium · from $0 · Cursor

Cursor is an AI-augmented code editor where you can describe what you want a component or layout to do and have it written for you, or ask it to explain and edit existing code. For graphic designers who are learning to ship front-end work, or who collaborate closely with developers, it removes a significant amount of friction from writing and iterating on code. It’s less relevant if your practice stays in design tools rather than production code.
