Excellent advice! I run a marketing and business development consultancy, working with a lot of freelance designers. Those that are successful (and get the most work) are the ones that have done exactly what this post suggests - started with the acorns, cutting their teeth with smaller clients and over time building an enviable portfolio. Working on a range of projects and treating each one (even the boring ones) like a masterpiece is the best way to hone your skills and become the type of well-rounded designer that the Nikes and Selfridges of this world are seeking out.
